According to the Gazeta Polska Codziennie daily, on 28 April 2010 Jerzy Miller, then interior minister and head of a commission appointed to investigate the crash -which led to the deaths of 96 people including President Lech Kaczyński - met with the other members of the commission and told them their conclusions should not differ significantly from the Russian version of events.

 

The daily adds that these “activities were carried out with the knowledge and consent of then Prime Minister Donald Tusk”.

 

Gazeta Polska said recordings from these meetings indicate that “Miller tried to convince the members of the commission that its report must be consistent and cannot raise any doubts.” The paper said the meeting was held on 28 April 2010, just weeks following the crash on 10 April.

 

The daily adds: “It can be concluded that it was then that a manipulated version of events about the Smolensk catastrophe was planned.”

 

“Information was selected and falsified,” Gazeta Polska Codziennie says, adding that “it was at that meeting that the investigation was de facto handed over to the Russians.”

 

The official report into the crash issued by the former Polish government cited a catalogue of errors on the Polish side, while also pointing to errors made by Russian staff at the control tower of Smolensk Military Airport.

 

A Russian report placed all the blame on the Poles. The wreckage of the plane has never been handed over by Russia to the Polish authorities.

 

A commission set up by the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party to carry out a new probe into the Smolensk crash will meet on Tuesday in a closed-doors session.
