Director Antoni Krauze told reporters in December that he hoped his film would present "new evidence that this tragedy was not just a plane crash."
The air disaster, which claimed the lives of dozens of the country's political and military elite, has after three years left the public opinion without any real answers into the causes. According to recent polls, 52% of Poles believe that the reasons for the crash have still not been clarified and do not believe in official accounts of the causes of the crash. Whereas, 31,7% of Poles believe that the delegation to Smolensk was assassinated.
Sensitivities surrounding the incident have also been heightened by the fact that the crash victims had been travelling to a memorial ceremony for those who died in the 1940 Katyn massacre, in which thousands of Polish intellectuals and military officers were killed by Soviet secret police.
Although Russian and Polish investigators concluded that the crash occurred as a result of pilot error and poor weather conditions, many maintain that the incident was caused by two explosions in the last phase of the flight.
“Principal photography with actors will begin in June,” producer Maciej Pawlicki told the Polish Press Agency. “The film will be shot in Poland, the USA and Georgia,” he confirmed. Producer Pawlicki said that it was too early to reveal which actors were taking part in the film. Noted composer Michal Lorenc has agreed to write the music for the film and cinematographer Michal Pakulski has also joined the project.
The 73-year-old director Antoni Krauze recently won plaudits for his 2010 film Black Thursday (Czarny Czwartek). The film focused on the bloody communist crackdown of December 1970 against protesting workers in the Baltic city of Gdynia.
Krauze's film is expected to be based around the efforts of a young journalist wading her way through an "avalanche of lies" as she endeavours to "seek the truth at all costs" about the crash.
Director Antoni Krauze remains defiant about criticism of the Smolensk project, saying it was to be expected that "articles and narrative mainstream media would [take an] unfavourable view" of his efforts. He even welcomed the attacks on his film, describing them as a "gift" because it was helping to disseminate information about the project.
Krauze's movie is due to be completed later this year and its world premiere is scheduled for April 10, 2014 -- the fourth anniversary of the Smolensk disaster.
Currently donations can be made to help in the creation of the movie and in the fight for the truth.
